"THE CZECH VERSIONS    Just as the career of John Hus makes Bohemia one of the earliest foci of the Reformation, so the care that Hus and some of his followers, notably one Martin Lupáč, expended on the modernization and revision of a very ancient Slavic translation of the whole Bible, made Czechish one of the earliest languages of Europe in which the Bible was printed.   In fact, no less than six separate editions of the Bible or portions of it in Bohemian belong to the age of the "incunabula"--printed prior to 1500. The place where the first New Testament was issued in 1475 is unknown, and only two copies of it are in existence.   But Prague was the place where the first complete Bible was printed in 1488, the city authorities and professors of the famous University faculty joining in the work, to give it a prestige that no other early vernacular Bible enjoyed.   During the sixteenth century, pre-eminently the century of the Protestant Reformation, this Bohemian Bible was revised and reprinted many times and in various cities.   But towards the end of that century the Kralicka Bible, as it is called from the Moravian castle where it was printed at the expense of Baron von Zerotin, first saw the light and henceforth displaced the earlier version.   It was made from the Hebrew and Greek originals by a committee of eight dis- tinguished scholars of the "Bohemian Brethren" and was issued in six volumes as fast as completed, from 1579 to 1593.   It is said to remain, to this day, the standard of Bohemian speech.   The Roman Catholics continue to use modern revisions of the older Czechish [s]criptures, since these were derived from the Latin Vulgate Text."--1000 Tongues, 1939   [Info only]
