OUTLINE: The Gospel Of Luke

LUKE 5
'Son Of Man In Galilee'

   KEY VERSE: 5:31 -- "And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick."

I. CHRIST TEACHES THE PEOPLE OUT OF PETER'S SHIP (1-3)

  -- "lake of Gennesaret" = Sea of Galilee: relatively small [13 miles long,
                            7 miles wide], but it is 150 feet deep, & the 
                            shoreline is 680 feet below sea level. 

  -- Josephus [historian] wrote that as many as 300 fishing boats might be 
     present on this body of water at one time. 

II. IN A MIRACULOUS TAKING OF FISHES, SHOWS HOW HE WILL MAKE HIM, JAMES & 
    JOHN "fishers of men" (4-11) 

  A. "they forsook all, and followed him." (11)

     -- TRUE DISCIPLESHIP will COST you something: Luke 18:28-30

  B. See Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20 [both include Andrew] 

III. CLEANSES A LEPER (12-15) 

  A. Leprosy: a FEARED disease because there was NO known cure for it, & 
              some forms of it were highly CONTAGIOUS (12)

It had a similar emotional impact & terror associated w/ it as AIDS does today.
The priests monitored the disease, BANISHING lepers w/ active cases to prevent the spread of infection & READMITTING lepers whose disease was in remission.

  B. We Must Learn to Reach Out & Touch the Lives of even the Unlovely (13) 

  C. See Matthew 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45 

IV. PRAYS IN THE WILDERNESS (16) 

  -- Though BUSY we still need to take time to PRAY!

V. HEALS A MAN "sick of the palsy" (17-26) 

  -- "palsy" = paralyzed (18)

  A. In Bible times, HOUSES were built of stone & had flat roofs made of mud 
     mixed w/ straw.  Outside stairways led to the roof (18-19)  

  B. Jesus forgives this man (20,24)
     -- ONLY GOD could do this: Exodus 34:6-7

  C. See Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12

VI. CALLS LEVI A PUBLICAN (27-28)

  -- "publican" = tax collector who worked for the Roman government

  A. Levi [Matthew] no doubt was a very rich man

  B. Levi was the writer of the Bk. of Matthew

VII. EATS WITH SINNERS, AS BEING THE PHYSICIAN OF SOULS (29-32)

  A. The Great Physician & The Sick (31)
     -- Jesus is a Friend of lost sinners

  B. "sinners" are called "to repentance" (32)

  C. See Matthew 9:9-13; Mark 2:13-17

VIII. FORETELLS THE FASTINGS OF THE APOSTLES AFTER HIS ASCENSION (33-35) 

  A. The Bride & The Bridegroom [L.J.C.]

     -- Jesus knew His death was coming

  B. See Matthew 9:14-15; Mark 2:18-20

IX. AND ILLUSTRATES THE MATTER BY THE PARABLE OF "old bottles" & WORN 
    "garment" (36-39) 

    -- "bottles" = goatskins sewed together at the edges to form watertight 
                   bags
