LUKE 4
'Temptation Of The Son Of Man'

   KEY VERSE: 4:18 -- "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised."

I. THE FASTING AND TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (1-13)

  -- For 40 consecutive days the devil tried to get Jesus to fall (2) 

  A. Lust Of The Flesh -- "man shall not live by bread alone," (4)

  B. Lust Of The Eyes -- Only Worship & Serve The Lord Thy God (8)

  C. Pride Of Life -- "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord your God."  (12)

II. HE BEGINS TO PREACH (14-15)
    
  A. "Galilee" was an Area about 60 miles long & 30 miles wide.

     It was an ideal place to preach because there were over 250 towns 
     concentrated there.  Many Jewish synagogues available.

  B. Jesus Filled By The Spirit

     Fulfills Isaiah 11:2-3

III. THE PEOPLE OF NAZARETH ADMIRE HIS "gracious words", BUT BEING OFFENDED, 
     SEEK TO KILL HIM (16-30) 

  A. Read In The SYNAGOGUE from Isaiah 61:1-2

Synagogues were very important in Jewish religious life.
During the Exile when the Jew no longer had their Temple, synagogues were established as places of worship on the Sabbath & as schools for young boys during the week.
A synagogue could be set up in any town where there were at least 10 Jewish families.

  B. Claimed To Be The Messiah (21)

  C. Jesus was NOT Accepted as a Prophet in his own Home Town.

  D. Jesus' Time To Die Had Not Yet Come 

  E. Because Of God's Protection And Power, Their Plan Failed

IV. HE CURES ONE POSSESSED OF THE DEVIL IN THE SYNAGOGUE (31-37)

  A. Jesus had "authority" & "power" Over the devilish spirit (36)

  B. See Mark 1:21-28

V. PETER'S MOTHER-IN-LAW IS HEALED BY JESUS "immediately" (38-39)

  A. Peter had been married.

  B. God Gives us Health so that we may Serve Others (39)

  C. See Matthew 8:14-17; Mark 1:29-34

VI. AND VARIOUS OTHER SICK PERSONS (40)

  A. Jesus "laid his hands" on EVERY one of them & "healed" them.
  
  B. Miracles done by Christ were for the Purpose of Authenticating His 
     Ministry.

VII. THE DEVILS ACKNOWLEDGE CHRIST, AND ARE REBUKED (41)

  A. Christ Didn't Need the devil's Advertising.

  B. He Didn't Compromise with the hearers, 
                          with satan or 
                          with evil.

VIII. HE PREACHES THROUGH THE CITIES OF GALILEE (42-44)
