OUTLINE: The Gospel Of Luke

LUKE 3
"John's Ministry; Baptism & Geneology Of The Son Of Man"

   KEY VERSE: 3:22 -- "And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."

I. THE PREACHING AND BAPTISM OF JOHN THE BAPTIST (1-14)

  See Isaiah 40:3-4 

  A. John Proclaimed Christ (3-6,15-16) 
     -- We need to speak Simply, Sincerely, Tactfully & Faithfully. 

  B. John Stressed Sin, Repentance & Forgiveness (3,7,8)
     -- All people are NOT God's children.

  C. John "warned" of Judgment (7,17)
     -- People will reap what they sow. 
     -- Retribution for sin & unbelief is an inescapable FACT of God's 
        revelation.
     -- No human being ever need to go to Hell...that dreadful place prepared 
        for the devil & his demons. 

  D. John Was SPECIFIC in His Preaching (10-14)

     -- "publicans" (tax collecters) were not to rip off the people (12-13)
     -- "soldiers" were not to make false accusations [lies] 
        Be honest & fair!

     -- Sin need to be spelled out in detail oftentimes.
     -- What does God expect us To Be, Do & Say?

II. HIS TESTIMONY OF CHRIST (15-17)

  A. The Baptism Of John "with water;" (16a)
     IMMERSION only pictures the gospel: death, burial & resurrection 
                                         of the LJC. 

  B.  The Baptism Of Jesus "with the Holy Ghost and with fire:" (16b)
      -- Acts 1:5
      "with fire" -- probably a picture of judgment

III. HEROD ANTIPAS IMPRISONS JOHN (18-20)

  See Matthew 11:2-3; 14:3-5; Mark 6:17-18

  -- John Suffered for Christ ... Have we in the past or presently at all? 

IV. CHRIST, BAPTIZED, RECEIVES TESTIMONY FROM HEAVEN (21-22)

  A. The Son Manifest In The Flesh 
     -- John 1:1-2,14

  B. The Holy Ghost Manifiest "in a bodily shape like a dove" (22a)

     1. Jesus Is Annointed By The Spirit 

        Fulfills Isaiah 11:2-3

  C.  The Father Manifest In "a voice came from heaven," (22b)
      -- Scriptural baptism is a matter of PLEASING our heavenly Father 
      -- Convenience is not to be a factor.

  D. See Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; John 1:32-34

  E. The Lord Jesus Christ Accepted the Baptist's N.T. Baptism
     Should we accept anything less?  NO!

V. THE AGE AND GENEALOGY OF CHRIST FROM JOSEPH UPWARDS (23-38)

  A. Age 30 Was the Prescribed Age for Priests to Begin Their Ministry 
     (Numbers 4:3) 

  B. Lineage Goes Back To Adam (38) 

  C. Is Mary's Line Of Descent (23)
     -- "Heli" was Joseph's father-in-law

  D. 19 of the 74 Persons Mentioned Are Also In Matthew 1:1-17
