'Son Of Man Sendeth Out The Seventy Disciples'KEY VERSE: 10:2 -- "Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest."
I. CHRIST SENDS OUT AT ONCE SEVENTY DISCIPLES TO WORK MIRACLES, AND TO PREACH (1-11)
A. "sent them two and two" (1) -- Team Ministry B. We need a VISION to reach ALL people (1) -- Mark 16:15 C. We are to ask God to send forth more "labourers" into the great "harvest". (2) -- Matthew 9:37-38; John 4:35 D. Christian workers should expect OPPOSITION (3) [e.g. Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem; enemies: Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem; see Bk. of Nehemiah 2:1-20; 4:1-3,6-7; 6:1-4] II. PRONOUNCES a "woe" AGAINST CERTAIN CITIES (12-16) A. "Sodom" was an evil city that God destroyed for its great sinfulness (12) -- Genesis 19 B. "Capernaum" was Jesus' base for His Galilean ministry (15) [JUDGMENT for REJECTING Jesus.] C. It is DANGEROUS to reject a person who speaks for Christ (16) III. THE SEVENTY RETURN "with joy"; HE SHOWS THEM WHEREIN TO REJOICE, AND THANKS HIS FATHER FOR HIS GRACE (17-22) A. "your names are written in heaven." (20) B. "thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent" (21) -- Human reason is NOT the sole & final criterion by which ALL things MUST be judged. IV. MAGNIFIES THE HAPPY ESTATE OF HIS CHURCH (23-24) V. TEACHES the "lawyer" HOW TO ATTAIN "eternal life", AND TO TAKE EVERY ONE FOR his "neighbour" THAT NEEDS his "mercy" (25-37) A. Love the Lord...Love your neighbor (27) -- Matthew 22:37-39; Leviticus 19:18; Deuteronomy 6:5 B. "who is my neighbor?" (29)The word "neighbour" implies a two-sided relationship; your neighbour is the one who helps you--and your neighbour is also the one who needs your help.
C. The Good Samaritan Lesson 1. The "thieves" stripped and wounded "A certain man" (30) *** an object to use & exploit *** 2. "a certain priest" (31) -- "when he saw him, he passed by on the other side" *** a problem to avoid *** 3. "a levite" (32) -- "came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side" *** an object of curiousity *** 4. "a certain Samaritan" (33-35) -- He gave up personal comfort, physical energy, & valuable time. *** a person to love *** Do we have "compassion"? (33; Jude 22) Do we "care"? (34,35) 5. "Go, and do thou likewise" (37) -- We are to SHOW mercy on other people. VI. REPREHENDS "Martha", & COMMENDS "Mary" HER SISTER (38-42) A. "Mary...sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word." (39) B. "Martha was cumbered about much serving" (40) C. Are you so busy doing things for Jesus that you're not spending any time with Him? D. We NEED both SERVICE & WORSHIP
