[There are no excuses for dry, uninteresting sermons.] 2. Personal experiences. Example: God's people need to make up their minds which way they want to go. Illustration is NOT to preempt the Word of God. [Experience brings authenticity.] 3. Occasions/Happenings near at hand. --Every day things. a. Holidays--Capitalize on what the people are thinking about. b. Election--Elect of God. c. Ragging Issues--In town. [Not out-of-date stuff.] 4. Conversation and Personal Contact Example: The World's Five Most Wanted Men. --From your church, visitation --Counseling (do NOT embarrass your people, be confidential). --Always be filling up the can with information. 5. Other books. --Encyclopedias, commentaries, theology books. 6. Sermons you have heard. 7. Sermons you have read. --Classical ones of the past. 8. Publications of any sort. --News magazines, church newspapers. [Newspapers.] 9. Reflections. --What you have Read, Thought, Observed, Gathered on the subject. --'Homiletical mind'. --You NEED to be thinking. 10. Your file. Example: Earthquake (Matthew 24). 11. Miscellaneous material that you have. 12. Pastoral work. --Sensing needs of the people. --Where are the people at? 13. Contacts with other preachers. 14.
