Church awaits
repairs after
Friday fire

   BISMARCK (AP) -- A
Bismarck church damaged
by fire may not be able to
hold services for months,
but the pastor and his wife
are thankful no one was
hurt.
The Rev. Jeff Olson said a
family of six from Valley
City had planned to stay at
                              the
                              church
                              for about
                              a week

                              told the

our church from burning
down,'"
Olson said.

age estimate ranges from
$200,000 to $400,000.
   Authorities said the cou-
ple's daughter awoke
around 2:30 a.m. Friday, not
feeling well.   She woke her
mother, and the two of them
smelled smoke and found
the flames shooting out from
under the washing machine.
Chris Watkins, his wife and
children were able to get out
of the church and returned

to Valley City later Friday.
   "My wife got me up,"
Chris Watkins recalled Sat-
urday.   "It all happened
really fast.
   "Everyone's OK,"
he
said.
   Tami Olson said about 35
people attend services at
the church, on Sunday or
Wednesday nights.   She
believes the building was
built around 1955.

   Fire officials estimate up
to four months before the
church can hold services
again, Tami Olson said.   Sun-
day's services were planned
at Bismarck's Comfort Inn,
and church members would
look for another place later,
she said.
"At least we didn't have a
family in the community
who lost everything,"
she
said.
